A graduate of York University, Brenda attained her Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and an Honours Degree in Social Work through night school while raising her family. First elected in 1991 as a Public School Board Trustee for York Region, Brenda has represented her hometown of Richmond Hill, Ontario, at every level of municipal government. Following two terms (1991-94 and 1994-97) as the Ward 2 Councillor for Richmond Hill, Brenda challenged two incumbents to win a seat on the Regional Council of York with enough votes to be appointed the Deputy Mayor of Richmond Hill (2000-2003). Brenda again took the title of Deputy Mayor during the 2006 to 2010 term of office.
She has been elected by other elected officials from across Ontario to serve on the Executive of the Association of Municipalities of Ontario and on the Executive of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities. Currently, Brenda remains a Councillor for Richmond Hill and the Region of York. She has worked as a Director with the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) from 1997 – 2014. In fact, Brenda is the longest serving Director in the history of the FCM. Brenda has been publicly acknowledged and has received awards for her work to protect the natural environment and our quality of life. In 2012 Brenda was nominated by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities to receive the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal. Brenda was proud to share the honour of receiving her medal with Social Workers from across the country.
